Hospital sites grow in layers, and the result is rarely legible to someone arriving for the first time. Patients come anxious, often unwell, sometimes with a family member pushing a wheelchair, and are asked to find a department whose name means nothing to them.

Atria takes them from the car park or the bus stop to the right waiting area, on a route that accounts for the entrances actually open at that hour and the lifts actually working that day — and offers a step-free option to anyone who needs one, without them having to ask for it.

Education and campuses

Universities, colleges and multi-building schools

A campus is a navigation problem twice over: between buildings and within them. Every autumn a new cohort arrives and spends its first weeks late, along with open-day visitors, conference delegates and contractors who have never set foot on the site.

Because Atria treats the outdoor paths and the indoor corridors as one connected network, a journey from the bus stop to a seminar room on the third floor of another building is a single set of directions rather than three separate acts of guesswork.

Corporate and workplace

Headquarters, multi-tenant offices and flexible workplaces

A visitor's impression of an organisation is formed in the first ten minutes, and those minutes are usually spent looking for a meeting room. Flexible working has made this harder: occupants move floors, teams reconfigure, and the same address houses several businesses.

Atria routes guests from the entrance to the room, helps new starters find their way around a building they have not learnt yet, and adapts when the floor layout is changed again next quarter.

Civic and public buildings

Councils, courts, libraries, museums and public services

Public buildings serve everyone, which means they must be navigable by people who are unfamiliar, in a hurry, anxious, or all three. Many are historic buildings adapted many times over, with the confusing geometry that follows.

Atria gives the public clear directions to the counter, courtroom, hearing or exhibition they are there for, and gives the organisation a straightforward way to keep those directions correct as services move.

Transport and interchange

Stations, terminals and connected transport hubs

In transport buildings, wayfinding is measured in minutes that passengers do not have. Connections are tight, levels are many, and the accessible route is frequently the longest one.

Atria guides passengers between platforms, gates, entrances and onward services, including the step-free path, so that the time between arriving and departing is spent travelling rather than searching.

Retail and mixed-use destinations

Shopping centres, leisure complexes and mixed-use estates

Mixed-use destinations combine shops, offices, leisure and parking, each with its own pattern of visitors and its own opening hours. Tenancies change constantly, and printed directories age badly.

Atria directs visitors from their parking space to a specific unit and back again, and keeps up as the tenant mix changes — without a new set of boards being commissioned each time.

Industrial and secure sites

Manufacturing, logistics, research and controlled-access estates

On sites where access is genuinely restricted, directions must respect the restrictions. A contractor should be routed to the plant room they are cleared for, by a path they are permitted to walk.

Because permissions are part of how Atria calculates a route rather than a note attached to it, visitors are guided only through the areas open to them, and never towards a door that will not admit them.
